Home Security System Dangers

June 24, 2010 in Home Security System

In today’s world, safety comes at a premium. The news is chock full of crimes being perpetrated near residential areas. This can make many homeowners feel uneasy and looking for answers. The most obvious solution may seem to be to have a home security system installed in the home. On the surface this option makes sense. Statistically this option is much safer than investing in a firearm to protect the home. The idea that having piece of mind is worth a monthly dollar amount seems reasonable. The allure of having an invisible force field around the home lulls many into a false sense of security. If you are serious about protecting your loved ones, your valuables, and your property, then you must think about the dangers associated with home security systems.

Home security systems are easy enough to understand. There is a central control usually located near a main hall or access point. A keypad located at the central control allows for the many zones designated throughout the house to be activated and deactivated at will using a master code. The central control is wired to any and all entry points to that are of concern to the homeowner. The entry points are made part of the security grid. The control pad is remotely connected to the company as well as local authorities. Once the security system is breached or compromised the system goes into action. There is usually an alarm that sounds throughout all the zones in the house. This acts as a deterrent as well as alarming the neighborhood of a possible intruder.

The above system is straightforward and for most people this is enough to get them by. The truth is that home robberies happen less frequently then the advertisements would lead you to believe. Home invasions are even less likely, with the majority happening in neighborhoods with an already high crime rate. The idea of the suburban peril that many homeowners worry about is virtually nonexistent. This does not mean that robberies and home intrusions do not happen in more upscale neighborhoods. Is there a constant police presence near more affluent neighborhoods? The facts are clear that there is actually more police activity in neighborhoods with higher crime rates. It is the illusion that more affluent neighborhoods present that is their greatest asset.

The dangers of a home security system are putting too much faith into them. Security for the home is important but an alarm system is only a deterrent, it does not solve the issue completely. There are other steps to take outside of installing an alarm system. Plant protective bushes around vulnerable windows and add adequate lighting around the outside of the home to deter would-be intruders. Locking doors and securing windows while away is also an effective habit to stop unwelcomed visits as well as participating in neighborhood watch programs. With a proactive approach to home security you can rest easy knowing that your home is truly secure.
