Home Security New Year’s Resolutions

January 6, 2011 in Home Security System

One of the best traditions throughout the Western world is that of New Year’s resolutions. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans look back over the past year and realize they want to make changes to enhance their lives and make them happier and healthier. Oftentimes, theses changes have to do with going to the gym more often, eating healthier, and spending more time with loved ones. But one key aspect of a happy life is often overlooked: safety. This year, we encourage you to make a New Year’s resolution to amp up your home security system and maintain safe home security habits. The results will include peace of mind, enhanced safety for you and your family, better protection of your property, and overall less stress.

If you don’t have a home security system already, it’s time to get one. Depending on your living situation and your budget, you can install a good home security system yourself, or you can have an expert do it for you. Whatever you choose, make sure that all vulnerable areas of your home are covered and you have some form of direct response system. Also make sure that your security system includes smoke and fire alarms – remember, home security is not just about burglary prevention, but also prevention of fire. Customize your security measures according to where you live and what the climatic conditions are. If you live in an area that suffers floods during certain times of the year, be sure to install a flood detector, and if you live in a cold area, take appropriate measures to prevent your pipes from freezing up.

Make a list of good home security habits and stick to them. Never leave doors or windows open or unlocked while you’re away or asleep, and never give out your key or your home security system’s code to anybody unnecessarily. Make sure your yard is well lit and landscaped in a way that does not offer cover to hiding criminals. Check all your home security equipment regularly, and repair or replace any parts that are not in optimal condition.

Last, but not least, don’t forget about your cyber security! Maintain good computer security practices by installing a firewall and anti-virus software on your computer. Change your passwords regularly, and never save sensitive information, such as your social security number, on your computer.

Keeping these simple home security tips in mind will make for a safe and happy New Year!
